This evening you’re in for a treat as we bring together several top paddlers and instructors from the great State of Texas. Bring your questions – because we’ll have answers. Our panel of experts will include ACA certified instructors, long-time whitewater paddlers, touring paddlers, safety instructors, recreational paddlers – all coming together to answer your questions. Kelly Howard will facilitate. Ever wanted to explore the many rivers, lakes, and coastal areas that Texas has to offer? There is no better way than in a kayak. Interested in taking a week long camping kayak trip along a beautiful coast? Want to learn about the rivers and lakes to explore just minutes from Downtown Houston? Ever wanted to try running a whitewater river? Join us for Kayaking 101 and learn everything you need to know about this fantastic way to get outside! We will review the basics of kayaking, great places to kayak, and all the equipment you need including in-store demonstrations of kayaks and kayaking gear. Bayou City Outdoors loves to paddle. Bayou City Outdoors Hiking In Houston Cleveland Park, Scotland St. & Jackson 8:30 AM – NOON Want to go hiking without having to travel outside of the city? Come discover all the trails and hideaways along the Buffalo Bayou! Get lost exploring the winding flat trails, bridges, and modest hills while exercising at an easy to moderate pace. Along this 6 mile hike we will pass the bat viewing area, art sculptures, and maybe even one of the rumored Buffalo Bayou alligators or Osprey couples! We meet at Cleveland Park on the north side of Memorial Dr., there is a foot-walkway over Memorial here. The hike will start here and then we head towards downtown on the north side of the bayou. There is parking along the street for free. When we reach downtown, we’ll stop for a water/coffee break so bring a few dollars. At the end of the hike you will have worked hard, made new friends and discovered all sorts of Houston secrets along Buffalo Bayou in our Bayou city! As long as it is cool outside, this is a dog-friendly event for your canine friends who are up for six miles. Free for Members and Non-Members alike. Meet at 8:15AM; depart 8:30AM on the dot! Bayou City Outdoors Holiday Farmer’s Market Tour Onion Creek, 3106 White Oak Dr, Houston, TX 77007 8:00 AM – NOON We have several Farmer Markets right here in the middle of the city, which bring in local organic produce every Saturday. Bring your backpack to carry what you purchase, and let's shop the markets on our bikes! Now we're riding it Holiday Style! Wear Christmas colors, put your jingle bells on, or even decorate your helmet! Santa hats are great as long as they fit over your helmet Let’s take a ride through the side streets, trails, and residential areas in the heart of Houston! This is a very social ride and all levels of riders are welcome! We will start the morning off with coffee at Onion Creek and then cruise through 3-4 markets to shop for fresh produce, sauces, jams, and bread. This is a 12-15 mile ride that lasts about three hours so bring plenty of water and a backpack to carry your goodies! December may be a cold month so please dress appropriately in layers. If you’d like to join us but don’t own a bike, West End Bicycles rents bikes for $25 per day at 713/861-2271 or www.westendbikes.com. If you are a member of Bayou City Outdoors and do not have bike we can loan you a bike for the ride. Meet at Onion Creek, 3106 White Oak Dr, Houston, TX 77007. The Words to Stir the Soul events spotlight some of the region’s best writing by providing a unique opportunity for both readers and attendees to deepen their appreciation of the region in which we live. This year, the Center of the American West will feature the work of Boulder-based poet and essayist, Reg Saner. His writings and poems have been featured in more than 140 magazines and 40 anthologies. His most recent book, The Four-Cornered Falcon: Essays on the Interior West and the Natural Scene, was published in 2011. In 1999, Mr. Saner became Boulder’s first poet laureate.
